The impressive design of the roof above the canopy of the cyclorama.

A large draped canopy above the platform blocks the view of the underside of the rotunda roof. If visitors could see how the cyclorama is designed, the illusion would be destoyed. The canopy also limits the amount of daylight from above, so the painting only gets indirect natural light and the canvas itself virtually disappears.
