In the summer of 1896, Innsbruck hosted the first "International Exhibition for Physical Education, Health Care and Sports". One of the main attractions was a giant cyclorama of the Tyrolean war for independence of 1809. The painting was commissioned by members of the tourism industry who hoped that this spectacular representation of history would provide the public with a lasting image of the beauty of the Tyrolean landscape.
